A photo tour of alpine Switzerland

Learn landscape photography & tour the Swiss Alps.

Brand new for 2023, my five night Switzerland photography tour & workshop takes place in one of the most beautiful regions of the country, Graubünden or Grisons as it is less formally known.

Glistening Lakes

Graubünden or Grisons as it is less formally known, is one of twenty six cantons in Switzerland and it is located in the south east corner of the country. There are 615 lakes, almost a 1000 mountain summits and 150 valleys in Grisons.

One of the most prominent lakes is Silsersee near St Moritz but all offer wonderful reflections pre sunrise as the first rays of light hit the peaks. It is a very tranquil way to start you your day.

Majestic Castles

There are numerous castles in Grisons but one of the most impressive without a doubt is Tarasp Castle, a dominant 11th century hilltop castle located in Scuol in Lower Engadine.

To stand on the small hillock in the village at sunrise and watch the early morning colour transform the mountain peaks behind the castle before the light slowly illuminates the castle itself is to be experienced and enjoyed.

Huge Viaducts & Trains

This corner of Switzerland has so much to offer the landscape photographer and in Grisons, the most iconic views involve trains and viaducts.

There are numerous stunning viaducts that tower over gorges and run through beautiful verdant valleys complete with the iconic red trains of Bernina Express and scenic Glacier Express as they glide through the Switzerland’s Rhaetian Railway transalpine route which was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

Great Mountain Passes

There are several breathtaking mountain passes to experience including Albula, Bernina, Fluela, Julier, and Maloja and all these will feature on the workshop.

These mountain passes offer unrivalled views of the surrounding peaks as well as snow on the tops, even in May. The odd mountain pass hairpins offer several opportunities to capture car light trails at dusk during our long exposure sessions too.

Lovely Churches

There are numerous churches in Grisons and they are quite often located in elevated positions while the grandeur of the mountains offer the best possible backdrop, such as this Reformed Church in Scuol in Engiadina.

While dawn and dusk generally offer the best light for the landscape photographer, churches quite often look stunning during daylight hours and especially in black and white if the light is dominant.

Rivers & Verdant Valleys

One-fifth of the Grisons total area is covered with forests and there are over 150 valleys that lie at high altitudes, between 886 and 1,969m (2,906-6,458 ft), and the region’s highest peak, Bernina, reaches a staggering 4,049 metres (13,284ft).

Engadine Valley is a long winding valley cupped between the snow-capped mountains of the Swiss Alps and at 50 miles long, Engadine valley is one of Switzerland’s most desirable destinations. A sunny climate, beautiful lakes, and a stunning alpine backdrop make Engadine, which encompasses star-studded destinations like St. Moritz, one of Europe’s most highly populated valleys.

Swiss Alpine Mountains

The Grison Alps are the mountains of the Graubünden canton of Switzerland. The highest peak, Piz Bernina is 4,049 metres (13,284ft) but in whatever direction you happen to look in, the views are exceptional.

The various mountain passes of Albula, Bernina, Fluela, Julier, and Maloja all offer the landscape photographer an endless supply of compositions and views, even snow capped peaks a feature here, even in the month of May when we visit.

Interesting Towns & Cities

The largest city in Grisons is Chur with a population of 200,000 people. It is also the oldest city in Switzerland with a settlement history of over 5,000 years.  Chur is famous for its olive groves but the views for the photographer are stunning.

If Chur is the largest city, St Moritz is Grisons most famous. This upmarket, glitzy alpine winter resort and the numerous lakes that lie within a short distance from St Moritz make it an ideal base to explore and discover the surrounding stunning scenery.
