Northumberland Photography Workshops & Tours

Beautiful northeast Coast of England

Northumberland - a seascape photographer's paradise

My Northumberland photography workshops and tours have been created with landscape photography in mind for the beginner and intermediate photographer. I offer you the perfect opportunity to capture the truly stunning coastal scenery of the Northumberland in a professional, friendly and enjoyable manner.

Forty Miles Of Coastline

Northumberland was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1958, and covers 40 miles of stunning coastline. Stretching from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north to the River Coquet estuary in the south, Northumberland has a wide variety of subjects just waiting to be photographed.

From castles to rock formations that date back to the carboniferous age some 350 million years ago. Stunning, pristine golden sandy beaches and sand dunes all provide wonderful opportunities to capture something rather special on camera.

Castles and Coastline

There are over seventy castles in Northumberland, the highest number of all the English counties. The most famous is the oldest, the 11th century Bamburgh Castle, however, nearby Alnwick Castle recently featured in the Harry Potter films.

But it is the castles of Lindisfarne and Dunstanburgh that also appeal to photographers. Lindisafarne Castle sits on a towering outcrop of basalt rock, while Dunstanburgh Castle sits high up on a grassy cliff edge while flanked by the super slippery, smooth black boulders on Embleton Beach below.

Sunrises & Sunsets

Northumberland sits on the east coast of the UK and as such, offers some stunning sunrises but the beautiful little village of Beadnell, complete with its quaint harbour is positioned in such a way, that it is possible to capture both sunrise and sunset from the same spot.

To watch a burning sun rise slowly over the Farne Islands is an absolute pleasure, especially when shot using a long lens. But equally as beautiful is a colourful sky that reflects in the remains of an outgoing tide on Bamburgh Beach.

Long Exposure Moments

The coastline of Northumberland is a perfect place to capture long exposure images. Using very dark filters in front of your camera lens tricks the camera into thinking that it is night time therefore requiring much longer shutter times to capture the shot.

Slowing down the shutter speed to thirty seconds or more has moving water look all misty, and ethereal, therefore creating more simplistic, and calmer looking images.
